THE MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY FOUNDATION GAUTENG
(MDFSA or MDF hereafter)
Muscular Dystrophy (MD) is a hereditary condition marked by progressive weakening and wasting of the muscles. There are more than 40 different dystrophies.
In most cases MD is a genetically inherited disease and runs in families. Children develop or inherit it if one or both parents carry the faulty gene.
Very seldom, the disease can appear spontaneous. In basic terms, these are the genes that is involved in making muscle proteins to ensure that muscles function optimally.
Due to lack of protein, these muscles become weaker over time and eventually most of the affected members will need a wheelchair.
Other symptoms may include trouble breathing or swallowing.
To slow down the progress of the disease, medication, exercise, therapy as well as good physical care and emotional support is of great help.
The MDF of South Africa was founded in1974 by Mr and Mrs Walker whose son, Michael had Duchenne MD and focused on research into the disease.
Presently the foundation focusses on awareness programs, emotional and social services, sharing of relevant and new information as well as support to members with equipment.
Support with equipment and other resources depend on the stock- and financial ability of the Foundation. The geographical area covered by this branch is Gauteng, Limpopo, North-West, the Free State and Mpumalanga.
The focus of the Foundation is to give hope and ensure a better the quality of life for all members.
